Opuntia microdasys 'Monstrose'

The 'Monstrose' designation refers to a unique genetic mutation that causes the plant to grow in irregular, swirling, or clumping patterns rather than the standard flat pads of a typical Bunny Ear cactus. This results in a one-of-a-kind sculptural shape that makes each specimen distinct.

This cactus requires at least 6 hours of bright, direct sunlight daily. If you are keeping it indoors, a south-facing window is usually the best location to ensure it receives enough light to maintain its golden color and compact growth.

While the plant is non-toxic to pets and humans, it is covered in glochids—tiny, hair-like spines that can easily detach and irritate the skin. We strongly recommend wearing gloves when handling or repotting the plant to avoid discomfort.

As a highly drought-tolerant succulent, this plant prefers to dry out completely between waterings. During the growing season, water sparingly only when the soil is bone-dry, and reduce watering significantly during the winter months.

You can keep it outdoors if you live in USDA Hardiness Zones 9-11, where temperatures remain warm. In cooler climates, it should be kept as a houseplant or moved indoors before the first frost, as it is not frost-tolerant.

Always use a specialized cactus or succulent potting mix that provides excellent drainage. Avoid standard potting soils, as they retain too much moisture and can lead to root rot.
