Yes, the ring is designed to sit snugly on top of your portafilter basket. While it is not a locking mechanism, its precise fit ensures it stays stable during the grinding and distribution process.

This depends on the diameter of your tamper base. If your tamper is smaller than the inner diameter of the ring, you can tamp through it; however, most baristas prefer to remove the ring before tamping to ensure a completely level puck.

Cleaning is straightforward. Simply rinse it with warm water and mild soap after use, or wipe it down with a damp cloth. Avoid using abrasive scrubbers to maintain the finish of the aluminum.

While its primary function is to prevent grounds from spilling over the edges of your basket, it also creates a deeper funnel that allows you to distribute grounds more aggressively without making a mess, which can lead to a more even extraction.
