A 12 cm length is the standard for sport climbing, offering a good balance between weight and rope drag reduction. If you are climbing routes with significant overhangs or wandering lines, you might consider adding a few longer draws to your rack to further reduce rope drag.

The orange indicator is a visual safety check that confirms the sling and the protector are correctly attached to the carabiner. If you can see the orange, everything is properly seated, allowing you to focus entirely on your climb.
